Background

The Beaver Valley Power Station consists of two pressurized water reactors that together produce 1,900 MW of electricity. Construction of Unit 1 began in 1970 with construction of Unit 2 beginning four years later. NRC granted operating licenses for Unit 1 and Unit 2 in 1976 and 1987 respectively. Both units received operating license renewals in 2009.

Citing economic conditions, the plant’s owners announced their intention to permanently shut down Beaver Valley Nuclear Power Station in 2021.
