Exelon’s announcement Wednesday that it will shut down TIM-1 on Sept. 30 signals the end of an era. Perhaps this is inevitable, as the nuclear industry has been struggling due to high operating costs, aging facilities, the availability of cheap natural gas and stalled demand for electricity.
