Background

Three Mile Island Unit 2 was a 910 MW pressurized water reactor located on the shores of the Susquehanna River. Unit 1 construction began in 1969 and the facility began commercial operations in 1978. In 1979, a malfunction of the cooling system caused a partial meltdown of the reactor core and Unit 2 is no longer operational. Unit 2’s nuclear fuel has been transported to Idaho National Labs and the plant has been decontaminated as necessary and stabilized. Further decommissioning of Unit 2 is anticipated to take place in concert with decommissioning of Unit 1.
